What I’m Into – Sept 2014

Been a long time since I’ve done a WIIT post.  For a long time I think I just wasn’t into much, ha!  But the last couple months I’ve started paying attention to what fun stuff I’m into.

TV

Dr. Who

Ahhhh omg this show is amazing!!!!  Everyone said you have to sit through a few bad episodes but then at episode 8 it gets good.   Yes, that’s true.  But I was hooked at Episode 2.

The first few are sooo cheesy, haha!  Reminds me of the old Lost in Space episodes, or the movie The Blob.  So if you like cheesy sci-fi, then you can probably make it through 7 episodes.  And then it gets great.  We’re partway through Season 2 so far .

Two great bits from Episode 8:

No Title

No Description

and this:

No Title

No Description

Sherlock – quickly went through that series.  Can’t believe I have to wait over a year for a new episode!!  I’m making my kids read the original stories that the episodes are (some of them loosely) based on, and then we’re going to re-watch it with them.  Can’t wait for that excuse to watch the show again.

New Girl

Bummer.  This season stinks so bad.  It’s so bad, they must be trying to ruin it.  How can you do so badly on accident?

The Mindy Project

Love, love, love.

Blackish

Hilarious so far.

Music

Stuck in Love soundtrack (such a good, quirky, if somewhat unrealistic plotline, of a movie.  With a gorgeous soundtrack.)

The Indie Mix – a Spotify playlist.   They have an Indie Pop mix that isn’t too bad, either.

Seth Lakeman

Glen Phillips

Kate Rusby

Books

Sula – by Toni Morrison.  This just slayed me.  It’s not a long book or a hard read, but oh man.  It is going to stick with me for a long time.

A local book about redistricting in our city.  We are still under federal jurisdiction for redistricting and school bussing, you know, because racism.  So, that was fascinating to learn the names of city council members, learn some of the backstory and unknowns about how the local political process works.  Especially interesting because my husband works for the city.   Local elections are important!!

Show Your Work by Austin Kleon.  Love his work. So inspiring and easy to read in 5 minute chunks.

A Room of Her Own – pretty classic essay by Virginia Woolf.  It was my first time reading it and now I understand why it’s stuck around.

The Kingdom of Ordinary Time by Marie Howe.  I’m not a big poetry person but oh wow.  These are incredible poems.

Fun Stuff

We went to a Civil War re-enactment last weekend.  I’ve wanted to see one since I was a kid, and surprisingly they aren’t as common as I thought they’d be.  After watching them though, I can see why.  Quite a lot of work goes into them.  (A fascinating book about it is Confederates in the Attic.)

We took a vacation to see family in New Jersey over Labor Day, and on the way visited Philadelphia.  The historical parts were actually not all that great, ha, but we had fun.  The way they did Ben Franklin’s house and fragment pieces was really creative.  I also realized that I usually don’t intentionally include black history into my historical vacation plans, so I remedied that.  We visited an historic A.M.E. church and it was both gorgeous and fascinating.  They had a museum in the basement and it was great for all of us to go through it, and the docent was fantastic.

And then we drove through a little bit of South Philly and omg, I understand why people talk about Philly the way they do.  I would love to go back without kids and spend a few days there.

I’m launching a zine, Walking Brave – a azine for when shame gets in the way.  Super excited for that.  The first issue is available for order until this weekend.

Don’t forget about Ferguson

Need jewelry?  Check out my friend Osheta’s Noonday  shop!  You can buy from her, or host a trunk show!

I’ve been watching TED Talks lately.  (So excited for Abby to do her TEDx talk next month.)

Good stuff for me to check out! (I must be the only one who can’t get into Mindy Project though, although I like the actress).

Come to the Museum of African American History in Baltimore! There’s also a great tour about the Jazz circuit and historic spots here.

Philly has great memories for me – I trained there with the Quakers many years ago. If you go back, check out the Arch Street Meeting House. They have a Peace Resource Center and bookstore there as well as exhibits.

I have relatives who are reenactors at Antietam but I’ve never been….slacker, me.

I’m proud of you and your zine. If you need an all black history vacation I know someone who would love to have you and all of your children in Atlanta….just saying. And thank you for the props. I will be holding all of those with me on the 17th.

Oh, those church windows are beautiful, and your black history vacay is dreamy in my eyes. 🙂 We too LOVED Black-ish and I’ll have to check out Dr. Who one of these days!

Sherlock is the best! I’m not sure about Black-ish after watching this week’s episode. The gay jokes are not necessary and countermand what the show’s message seems to be. I’ve never been to a Civil War reenactment but an acquaintance of mine has participated in them with her family her whole life. It strangely fascinates me.

I really enjoy the historical side of Philly. It does take quite a bit of time to wander through it all, though.
