With the 50th anniversary of the Selma march tomorrow, I wanted to bring all my kids up to speed on everything and place the current events within a historical framework. So we just sat and watched short videos for the last hour, and I just wanted to share them in case anyone else found them helpful.
The Story of Emmett Till (also we’re reading Mississippi Trial,
After talking about civil rights in general, voting rights, police brutality, we moved on to Ferguson. I summarized what happened before showing the videos.

Night coverage of police action in protests
pretty much the same coverage, but better high-pitched sound
Report by RT News – excellent video to watch. (Also to note, the comments in Selma videos about how it became international news/embarrassment)
Similar protest coverage, but at 1:09 a great chant to watch/discuss.
Then we started talking about other instances.
Eric Garner video – I actually stopped this shortly after they got him on the ground.
Tamir Rice video – We didn’t finish this one either, even though it’s not graphic, but we talked about his sister as well and how they were treated.
Photos/Stories of Unarmed POC killed by Police – the top picture is what I wanted them to see, but we talked about John Crawford too.
