In the fourth of the book’s thirteen extraordinary essays, titled “Flight,” Solnit writes:

Like many others who turned into writers, I disappeared into books when I was very young, disappeared into them like someone running into the woods. What surprised and still surprises me is that there was another side to the forest of stories and the solitude, that I came out that other side and met people there. Writers are solitaries by vocation and necessity. I sometimes think the test is not so much talent, which is not as rare as people think, but purpose or vocation, which manifests in part as the ability to endure a lot of solitude and keep working. Before writers are writers they are readers, living in books, through books, in the lives of others that are also the heads of others, in that act that is so intimate and yet so alone.

Very Short List

Is a burrito a sandwich? A Panera Bread had the exclusive right to sell sandwiches at a mall in Massachusetts, but the mall wanted to add a Qdoba to its restaurant offerings. Panera sued, claiming that Qdoba served burritos; burritos were a type of sandwich; and therefore, Qdoba’s menu violated Panera’s rights. The judge said nope — a burrito isn’t a type of sandwich.

Prepare to have your world turned upside down. Many people think of mushrooms as over-developed mould, ugly growths found in dank conditions. In reality this could not be further from the truth. As beautiful and varied as their leafy friends, mushrooms and other fungi can be found the world over in an unending range of brilliant colours and alien shapes.

Fearvana is most closely associated to the state athlete’s refer to as “The Zone”-where people have suppressed and ignored negative thoughts, but also have higher self-esteem and confidence. To me, Fearvana is that moment when I am putting one foot in front of the other on a long run or when I start climbing a rock wall or when I begin a journey to the summit of a mountain. It is a state of being always prefaced by fear, anxiety, tension and/or nervousness.

It’s not just billionaires like Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates who can change the world with their giving. It’s folks like us who chip in a little to put a meal on the table for a family going through hard times or to get someone in the developing world the healthcare he needs. These nine innovative nonprofits have found ways to help, and to vividly show you how your support makes a big impact.

Amy Lynn Andrews – The Useletter

This list of ways to work smarter, not harder has some well-known tips, but #16 is not talked about much. It’s common to include deadlines on your calendar, but put a start date on there too. Tip: After noting the deadline, break the project down into smaller tasks and schedule those on your calendar too, working all the way back to a start date. Keep those deadlines from sneakin’ up on ya!

Joshua Becker – Becoming Minimalist

We are not merely physical beings, spiritual beings, or emotional beings. We are human beings. And by this, I mean, all aspects of our being make up who we are and they can not be separated from one another.

Our physical being influences our spiritual being… our spiritual being influences our emotional being… our emotional being influences our physical bodies.
